Federal minimum salary rules updated

Salary increase pay

The U.S. Department of Labor on Tuesday announced new rules for overtime wages, updating the salary thresholds necessary to exempt workers from overtime pay.

Salaried workers today must earn at least $23,660 to be exempt; starting in January, the threshold becomes $35,568.

Washington state follows federal rules, but that could change. The state's L&I department has been working on updates for months, and rules that could take effect in July 2020 would set minimum salaries at $35,000 for employers with 50 or fewer workers and at $49,000 for 51 or more.
